Knowing God
March 23, 2009 - Pastor Todd Tjepkema

"There is no greater goal in life than to truly know God. Experiencing Him and knowing Him intimately is a treasure far greater than any human achievement. God takes great pleasure in those who seek to know Him." -Blackaby

"Thus says the Lord: Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches; but let him who glories glory in this that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising loving kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth." -Jeremiah 9:23-24

"But the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits."
-Daniel 11:32b

"No single book could contain the whole of God’s character. It will take eternity to grasp it. Why then is it so mandatory for us to know God now? The reason is that man is made in God’s image; therefore, no person can love God, serve God, be encouraged by God, or walk with God until he knows God. To the degree that we know Him will determine everything about us." -DeHaan

"And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." -John 17:3

"Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me Your way, that I may know You and that I may find Grace in Your sight." -Exodus 33:13

"'If I just do right, then I will be right.' The Bible makes clear that it is not what you "do" that counts with God; it is what you "be" that is important. It is character over conduct. As we get to know God, His character rubs off on us, and our conduct becomes purely an extension of what we know. We have been told for so long to "stand up for Jesus." However, we must first learn to "sit down with Jesus." Our standing is merely a temporary exercise if we have not learned to sit at His feet." -DeHaan

"For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings." -Hosea 6:6

"And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You." -Psalm 9:10

"We are modern people, and modern people, though they cherish great thoughts of themselves, have as a rule small thoughts of God." -J.I. Packer

"The highest science, the loftiest speculation, the mightiest philosophy, which can ever engage the attention of a child of God, is the name, the nature, the person, the work, the doings, and the existence of the great God whom he calls his Father." -C.H. Spurgeon

"As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever." -1 Chronicles 28:9

"The by-products of the Christian life do not produce the Christian life. God’s righteousness in me produces righteous behavior, but my righteous does not produce God’s righteousness in me. Only God can produce His righteousness in me, so what do I do? Find a passion to know God." -tjt

"Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death." -Philippians 3:8-10

"Christians ought not to content themselves with such degrees of knowledge of divinity as they already obtained. It should not satisfy them, as they know as much as is absolutely necessary to salvation, but should seek to make progress."

"This endeavor to make progress in such knowledge ought not to be attended to as a thing by the bye, but all Christians should make a business of it. They should look upon it as a part of their daily business, and no small part of it neither. It should be attended to as a considerable part of the work of their high calling." -Edwards

"For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God." -Romans 10:2-3

"This is where most of us go astray. Our thoughts of God are not great enough; we fail to reckon with the reality of His limitless wisdom and power. Because we ourselves are limited and weak, we imagine that at some points God is too, and find it hard to believe that He is not. We think of God as too much like what we are." -J.I. Packer

"Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! 'For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor?'" -Romans 11:33-34

About Pastors' Posts

The pastors of Tri-City Baptist Church have a wide variety of experience and education. This variety brings a richness to our ministry. Our pastors will post articles on topics near and dear to them. Every few days there will be a new article. Feel free to communicate with the author with any comments or questions. Part of Tri-City's mission is "to assist its members and other fundamental churches...in fulfilling the Great Commission." That is the purpose of this site. It is tied directly to our vision for our ministry. We trust it will be a blessing to you.
