Spring Play - April 9-10, 2010
The fine arts program is an important part of the education at Tri-City Christian Academy. It introduces students to new materials and subjects, developing talents that they might not be aware of otherwise. But the most important reason for this program is to help students learn to serve the Lord better by teaching them skills that will be useful in later ministry. To help teach speech and drama, TCA typically produces a play every other year. Much thought goes into selecting a play that conforms to biblical principles and much work goes into the performances. Over several years, the Academy has produced a variety of dramas, ranging from silly to serious. The previous two plays were Martyred: The Chet Bitterman Story and Frankenstein. The story of Martyred showed what some people sacrifice for the Lord. Frankenstein is a classic piece of literature with an applicable philosophy. The 2010 school play Fools: A Comic Fable by Neil Simon gave the audience and cast alike a chance to enjoy themselves. It is set in the late 1800s in the Ukrainian village of Kulyenchikov, a town cursed with stupidity. An unsuspecting, idealistic school teacher has come to town and quickly meets Something Something Snetsky (a sheepherder who can't find her sheep--or remember her first name), Yenchna (a vendor who milks her cow upside down to get more cream), and Sophia, the beautiful young lady who quickly captures his heart despite being unable to grasp the complexities of one plus one. The cast consisted of students from grades eight through twelve. Interested students auditioned and were chosen based on two criteria: the potential for performing well and the character to put in the necessary hard work to develop a character and perform in the play. Brett Larson captured the lead role of Leon Tolchinsky, the new school teacher, and Lydia Christensen played Leon's pupil and love interest, Sophia Zubritsky. The play was presented on Friday, April 9 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m. Both performances of the play were well-attended.and the audiences were not disappointed. Fools was a funny, well-produced play. The hard work of the TCA students certainly paid off and set a high standard for the next production. |
