Grading

Grade Reports

Grades are issued at mid-semester and after final examinations. Mid-semester grades are intended to inform the student of his/her academic progress, but they are not entered on the student's permanent record.

Grading System

The grading system is as follows:

All "Incompletes" must be submitted within 21 days of the end of each grading period, or the grade becomes an "F." The student is fully responsible for determining any incomplete work, finishing that incomplete work, and submitting it within the 21-day limit.

Grade point average (GPA) is computed by dividing the total quality points by the total number of attempted credit hours.

Repeating Courses

A grade of "F" may be removed only by repeating the course. A student may be permitted to repeat a course in order to raise an earlier grade of "D." The last grade earned is considered the grade of record as it pertains to credit toward graduation.

Academic Suspension

A student who has attempted 24 hours in residence at the College will normally be suspended at the end of a semester in which his/her cumulative GPA falls below the following minimums:

Freshmen/Sophomores 1.33
Juniors 1.66
Seniors 2.00

A student who has been suspended may make written application for reinstatement to the Academic Dean's office. A student subject to academic suspension for the second time is normally given final dismissal.

A student reinstated after an academic suspension is admitted provisionally (see Provisional Status, below).

Academic Probation

Satisfactory academic progress (SAP) is measured by the qualitative and quantitative standards described below. Each student must maintain SAP. Students whose cumulative GPA drops below the GPA requirements following the completion of a regular semester are placed on academic probation. Probationary status is removed when the student earns a cumulative GPA that satisfies the cumulative GPA requirements for SAP.

  1. Qualitative - A student must maintain the following averages on courses taken:

    Bachelor's (33-64 credit hours) 1.66
    Bachelor's (65-96 credit hours) 1.66
    Bachelor's (97-133 credit hours) 2.00
  2. Quantitative - A student must complete an academic program in one hundred fifty percent (150%) of the published time, i.e. a two year (four semester) program must be completed in six semesters. A four-year (eight semester) program must be completed in twelve semesters.
    1. All transferred credits and courses taken at IBC are used for SAP calculation.
    2. The maximum number of hours a student attempts cannot exceed one hundred fifty percent (150%) of the program length.
    3. Withdrawals, Incompletes and Repeated Courses are calculated in this total. (If a course appears on a student’s transcript, then it is used in the calculation.)
  3. Regulative - A student must maintain SAP to receive financial aid.
    1. A student becomes ineligible to receive financial aid at the point he/she fails to accomplish SAP.
    2. A student may receive financial aid in the semester following the point that SAP is met.

A student on academic probation is not eligible for an office in any student organization.

A student on academic probation will not be classified as a senior even if the required number of hours has been fulfilled.

Appeal Procedures

If a student is found to be ineligible for federal financial aid because SAP requirements were not met, the student may appeal this decision to the College’s Financial Aid Administrator by stating, in writing, the reasons why the minimum requirements were not met and why financial aid should not be terminated. The Financial Aid Administrator will review the appeal and determine whether suspending financial aid is justified. The student will be advised, in writing, of the decision.

Provisional Status

Transfer students admitted with less than a “C” average, or those reinstated after academic suspension, are admitted provisionally. Students thus admitted retain provisional status until they have earned a total of at least 12 hours at IBC and have earned a cumulative GPA of 2.00. If the students have not earned an average of 2.00 for these 12 hours, they are subject to dismissal.

A student who has provisional status is subject to all the restrictions named for probationary status (see Academic Probation, above). A student with provisional status may be given final dismissal at any time if this is in the best interest of the student and/or the College, as determined by the administration.

Scholastic Honors

The College office will publish a Dean's List of those students who achieve a GPA of 3.0 and higher for the semester grading period. To qualify, a student must carry a minimum of ten hours and must not have any "Incompletes" on his record.

Graduation with Honors

A candidate for the Bachelor of Arts or Associate of Arts degree will be graduated with honors as follows:

cum laude for a grade point average of 3.51-3.74
magna cum laude for a grade point average of 3.75-3.90
summa cum laude for a grade point average of 3.91-4.00

The GPA is based on the student’s entire college program. In computing the average, work taken elsewhere which has been accepted in transfer is considered at the same grade value as in the school where it was earned. Transfer students may not graduate with an honor higher than that to which their GPA at IBC would qualify them.
