Mu 1_1, 1_2, etc. Applied Music

one semester each, one hour each

(P-Piano, B-Brass, S-Strings, W-Woodwinds)

Private instruction as approved by the music department.

Mu 1C1, 1C2, etc. College Choir

one semester each, one hour per semester

Opportunity for all students to participate in IBC’s music program including performances in the Fine Arts recital each semester.

Mu 1E1, 1E2, etc. Ministry Team

one year each, one hour per year

Pre-selected members will prepare for and execute tours that will minister to fundamental churches and ministries through music, drama, and practical service.

Mu 1H1, 1H2, 2H1, 2H2 Private Hymnplaying

one semester each, one hour per semester

Private instruction in the skill of congregational accompaniment (by audition only).

Mu 1V1, 1V2, etc. Applied Voice

one semester, one hour

Class voice instruction as approved by the music department.

Mu 110 Fundamentals of Music Theory

one semester, one hour

Remedial music instruction including note names of the grand staff (including ledger lines), note values, time signatures, basic music symbols (dynamic signs, tempo marks, articulation, etc.) and an introduction to accidentals and key signatures.

Mu 115 Fundamentals of Conducting

one semester, one hour

A study and application of the principles and techniques of basic conducting including right hand gesture and movement, left hand independence, score reading, score study, baton technique, and communication.

Mu 121 Music Theory I

(Co-requisite: Mu 131)

one semester, three hours

An introduction to the rudiments of music: notation, rhythm, key signatures, scales, intervals, triads, chord progressions, sight singing, keyboard, and melodic dictation. (This course may be waived by passing a placement test.)

Mu 122 Music Theory II

(Prerequisite: Mu 121; Co-requisite: Mu 132)

one semester, three hours

A continuation of the fundamentals of Music Theory I, including part-writing, cadences, phrases, non-chord tones, and diatonic seventh chord functions.

Mu 131 Sight-singing and Ear-training I

(Co-requisite: Mu 121)

one semester, two hours

An introduction to sight singing and ear-training including melodic and rhythmic dictation.

Mu 132 Sight-singing and Ear-training II

(Prerequisite: Mu 131; Co-requisite: Mu 122)

one semester, two hours

Further experience in sight singing and ear-training including melodic and rhythmic dictation.

Mu 151 Music Appreciation

one semester, three hours

A general survey of music history with the purpose of building a background of appreciation for the various principles in music including guided listening assignments.

Mu 221 Music Theory III

(Prerequisite: Mu 122; Co-requisite: Mu 231)

one semester, three hours

Advanced part writing and analysis of secondary chords, borrowed chords, Neapolitan and augmented sixth chords, and modulations including ear training and sight singing of melodies which include modulation and chromaticism.

Mu 222 Music Theory IV

(Prerequisite: Mu 221; Co-requisite: Mu 232)

one semester, three hours

Analysis of binary and ternary forms with a survey of important twentieth-century styles and techniques, including impressionism, pandiatonicism, twelve-tone, serialization, and aleatoric music including ear training and sight singing of melodies in different modes.

Mu 231 Sight-singing and Ear-training III

(Prerequisite: Mu 132; Co-requisite: Mu 221)

one semester, two hours

Advanced sight singing and ear training including melodic and rhythmic dictation and a general survey of musical expression terms.

Mu 232 Sight-singing and Ear-training IV

(Prerequisite: Mu 231; Co-requisite: Mu 222)

one semester, two hours

Advanced sight singing and ear training of melodies in different modes including melodic and rhythmic dictation and a general survey of musical expression terms.

Mu 271 Church Music and Songleading

one semester, two hours

A study in leading congregational singing, practicing proper platform techniques, administering the church music program and understanding the philosophy of choosing Biblical music for the local church service.

Mu 272 Choral Conducting

(Prerequisite: Mu 271)

one semester, two hours

Principles and techniques of choral conducting, score reading, and interpretation of choral music.

Mu 301 Introduction to Music Notation

one semester, one hour

A survey and introduction to music publishing and sequencing.

Mu 351 History of Music I

(Prerequisite: Mu 151)

one semester, three hours

A historical survey of the development of Western music up to 1750 including structured listening with score reading.

Mu 352 History of Music II

(Prerequisite: Mu 151)

one semester, three hours

A historical survey of the development of Western music from 1750 to the present including structured listening with score reading.

*Mu 362 Fine Arts Fundamentals and Methods (Same as *Ed 362)

one semester, two hours

A uniquely combined approach to teaching fine arts in elementary school including methods of teaching art and music using various materials and media suitable for the Christian school.

*Mu 371 Group Vocal Techniques

one semester, two hours

A practical study equipping the choir conductor with practical tools for voice education in the choral setting.

Mu 373 Music Field Study

(Prerequisite: Administrative Approval) one hour

An internship of structured exposure to and experience in the local church music ministry. The student is responsible for all related expenses.

Mu 381, 382 Church Music Administration I, II

one semester each, three hours per semester

A survey of methods and materials for administering an effective music ministry in the local church including congregational singing, seasonal programs, budget planning, equipment, instruments, music library, adult choirs, and graded children’s choirs.

Mu 421 Philosophy of Music

one semester, two hours

A discussion-based course encouraging music majors to develop a Biblical philosophy of music’s purpose, place and practice in the local church.

Mu 442 Choral Writing and Arranging

(Prerequisites: Mu 121, 122, 221, 222 and Mu 301)

one semester, two hours

A guided workshop for the theory and practice of writing and arranging music for choral ensembles including unison children’s choirs, two-part children’s choirs, ladies' ensembles, men’s ensembles, SAB mixed choir, and SATB mixed choir with attention given to the vocal ranges and capabilities of the various ensembles, as well as instruction in writing keyboard and instrumental accompaniments.

*Mu 452 Hymnology (same as Hi 452)

one semester, three hours

An historical survey of Christian hymnody.

Mu 471 Congregational Songleading

one semester, one hour

A practical presentation of skills, techniques and ideas that encourage unified, enthusiastic, God-honoring singing in the local church congregation.

**Mu 490 Directed Reading in Music

one semester, one – three hours

A guided study in a specified musical topic; open only to upperclassmen who have secured permission from the faculty.

Mu L23 A Christian’s Music

January term, one hour

A study of the biblical principles about music and an evaluation of all types of music with a view toward establishing a biblical philosophy of and standards for music.
