Why Named Gifts?

God Wants Us to Remember

"Surely he [the good man] shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance."
Psalm 112:6
  • The Passover reminded God’s children of redemption in Egypt.
  • The pile of stones reminded them of the parting of the Jordan River.
  • The Lord’s Table reminds us of Jesus’ sacrifice and our need to be right with fellow believers.

In Psalm 111 God is praised for being a Giver; in Psalm 112 God is praised for His people’s giving. In Psalm 112:6 God promised that the righteous would have stability now and be remembered later; in Proverbs 10:7 He warned that the name of the wicked would rot.

God’s children are urged to reflect Him. The Apostle Paul told the early church to follow him as he followed Christ's example. In the beginning God said, "Let us make man in our image and likeness." It was God’s intent that Adam and Eve would reflect God and His values. Giving is a reflection of God, the Giver.

"The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot."
Proverbs 10:7

Named gifts are not intended to puff up individuals but to teach the generation to come the great heritage that makes IBC possible. They are reminiscent of the stone monument Joshua erected after the Israelites crossed the Jordan River (Joshua 4:5-9). When students wonder why a building or room bears the name of a person, we will have the opportunity to pass on that person’s testimony of God’s awesome works.
